Congressman Ross doing well after heart surgery

LAKELAND - The heart surgery performed on U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross "was successful and all is well," said Joni Shockey, his communications director.

The valve replacement surgery was performed at an unnamed Orlando hospital to correct a birth defect after Ross entered the hospital on Monday.

Ross, 56, is a three-term Republican congressman from Lakeland and is unopposed in the Republican primary Aug. 30. He said before the surgery that he expects a six- to eight-week recovery period and that he will be ready to campaign for the general election.

Democrat Jim Lange is challenging him for the District 15 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
