Federal Spending and Debt
We have made some important progress on reducing federal spending since I have been in office. For the first time since the Korean War, total federal spending has gone down multiple years in a row. Also, we’ve cut the deficit by two-thirds since I was elected.
But our work is far from done and we need to continue making serious changes to the way Washington spends taxpayer money.
That’s why I’m leading the call for long-term spending controls by introducing legislation that would mandate zero-based budgeting by the federal government. Families and small businesses across the country start their budget at zero every year - why not your federal government? My bill will force every federal agency to identify waste and efficiencies of all spending items. We cannot continue to bankrupt our great nation for future generations.
People can’t afford for Washington to take any more of their hard-earned money. Rather than bailing out Washington with another tax increase, Congress should work hard to ensure Americans keep as much of their paychecks as possible to spend and save as they see fit.
ObamaCare was sold to the American public with a number of false promises. I support repealing ObamaCare in its entirety - including all the tax increases and mandates that come with it.
I introduced and supported health care alternatives that would replace the failures of ObamaCare and put patients and doctors in charge - not federal bureaucrats.
My father and three brothers served our great nation in the military. As a country, I believe we must support our men and women who have sacrificed and fought for our freedom.
Since being elected to Congress, I have supported legislation to reduce the unacceptable backlog of disability claims at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and to improve access for veterans to the health care they honorably earned. Last year, I also supported increasing funding for veterans by nearly 10 percent.
Congress must work to ensure that the federal government continues to fulfill the promise it made to Senior Citizens who worked hard their entire lives with the understanding that Medicare and Social Security would be there for them in their retirement years. We must preserve, protect, and strengthen these programs so that they are available for current seniors and for generations after.
I support an “all of the above” energy policy that pursues both traditional and new sources of energy, in everything from oil and natural gas and nuclear to wind and solar power.
I have supported lifting the government’s 40-year-old ban on crude oil exports that will help grow the economy, create jobs, and allow the United States to compete on the world market against the Middle East. I also voted to permit the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which would create jobs and promote energy independence.
Our biggest obstacle to job creation continues to be the president and the job killing regulations implemented by his administration.
The government needs to provide employers opportunities to create jobs, instead of getting in the way. We need to reduce the size of government and cut the regulatory red tape to unburden our economy and get it working again.
As a Member of the Task Force to Investigate Terrorism Financing, I am fighting to cut off funding for radical terrorist networks across the globe. I have voted to increase funding for our military to ensure our troops have the resources to defeat ISIS, and I voted to enhance the security screening of individuals traveling to our homeland from countries with ties to terrorism.
Securing Our Border
We must secure our porous borders to prevent the flow of illegal immigrants and terrorists attempting to enter our country. I voted to increase border security funding, and I introduced legislation to finish construction of the 700-mile fence along our southwest border.
As the father of two sons, I understand how important education is for the future of our great nation. I supported the most substantial education reform in 25 years that replaces No Child Left Behind and returns power over education decisions back to the states, local governments and parents – where it belongs. This reform also once and for all prevents the federal government from coercing states into implementing common core.
Working For Floridians
Being born and raised in Central Florida, it has been the honor of a lifetime to represent our community in Washington. Since being elected, I have worked tirelessly on behalf of Floridians and our community.
I have led the fight to create more affordable flood insurance options for homeowners, to preserve Florida’s citrus industry, and to protect innocent children from deviant sexual predators. I have also introduced bipartisan legislation to protect citizens from identity theft, which is a growing problem in the Tampa Bay area, by requiring Social Security numbers to be truncated on written documents.
