Associated Industries of Florida Endorses Dennis Ross for Election to Congress
TALLAHASSEE – Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) today announced its endorsement of former state Representative Dennis Ross in his bid for election to Florida’s 12th Congressional District. First elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000, Ross was subsequently re-elected and served the people of Polk County until 2008.
“I am honored and proud to receive the endorsement of the Associated Industries of Florida. Since 1920, AIF has been the voice for Florida’s job creators. It is that kind of free market, competitive advocate that is needed today more than ever. When Washington owns auto companies, banks, insurance companies and is plotting a takeover of the health care industry, AIF and its members are the bulwark of the American dream,” said Ross. “The voters of District 12 can rest assured that, as a small business owner for more than 20 years, I will take those financially prudent, employee centered, free market principles to Washington. Like AIF members, I know what it takes to meet payroll, pay for health care, and go without in tough times. Together, we will teach Washington D.C. those lessons as well.”
During his time in the Florida Legislature, Ross sponsored legislation enacting landmark workers’ compensation reforms that reduced premiums making coverage more affordable and accessible to Florida businesses. As the lead negotiator for the House of Representatives on property insurance issues, he played an instrumental role in shaping a 2008 property insurance bill that called for greater transparency in the state’s rate-regulating decisions and quicker decisions on rate filings.
In 2008, AIF’s Financial Securities Council named Ross the 2008 House Legislator of the Year for his support of the business community and work on that year’s sweeping property insurance bills.
“Dennis is a veteran lawmaker who will carry his unwavering commitment to pro-business, free market principles to Capitol Hill. Florida needs leaders in Washington who recognize that creating a business-friendly climate will contribute to our future prosperity,” said Barney Bishop III, President and CEO of AIF. “AIF is proud to endorse Dennis in his bid for Congress.”
As an organization that encourages and supports the business and industrial enterprises of Florida, AIF provides important voting-record information and voting recommendations to the association’s 10,000 business members. Each summer, AIF issues its annual Voting Records Report, a detailed analysis of Florida House and Senate member votes on issues and legislation impacting Florida’s economic climate, businesses and employers. The Voting Records Report is based on thousands of votes cast on business-related bills and amendments as compared to the association’s legislative priorities for the year.
Legislators’ scores are calculated using their votes for pro-business legislation. While serving in the Florida House, Ross was a strong advocate for Florida’s businesses with an AIF historical voting record of 94 percent.
